About Dato’ Seri Ivan Teh

Technologist, company founder and a steady backer of the groups that hold Malaysian communities together.

Learning how organisations really work

Before he started a business of his own, Dato’ Seri Ivan Teh spent his early career in large technology firms. According to Digital News Asia, he worked with Intel and Hewlett-Packard in the United States and then moved to Accenture in Malaysia, where the job was to turn technical capability into answers for clients.

He has said the idea for Fusionex came from that period: a sense that there was a wide gap between technology and the people expected to use it, and that someone should close it. The company name, he explained, refers to fusing business and technology.

Building the foundation first

He founded Fusionex in 2005. An anecdote he shared with Digital News Asia says a lot about how he approaches shared effort. Some former colleagues offered to join straight away, even without pay. He asked them to wait until he had built the core platform himself, so that nobody would be working without a salary. The core team came together about six months later.

Malay Mail later reported that the business grew on revenue from satisfied customers, with no angel investor or venture funding behind it. In 2014, EY’s Entrepreneur Of The Year Malaysia programme named him its Technology Entrepreneur of the Year.

Why community building

The initiatives on this site follow from the same instinct: build something sturdy, then share it. A data company holds skills, systems and people that community groups rarely have, and the partnerships here put those assets to work through organisations already trusted on the ground.
